Varma Pharmacy is a family-owned company. Today it is managed by Dnyanprakash Varma, a qualified pharmacist with more than 25 years experience in the pharmaceuticals industry. Mukund Varma, B Pharm, MBA, DIB has recently joined him.
The present manufacturing facility of the company admeasures approximately 15,000 sq. feet, built on an independent land of approx. 1.5 acre, just 5 km away from Pune railway station. The factory has tablets, oral liquids, capsules, and ointment (external preparations) sections. Beta-lactum sections have been provided separately for tablets, capsules and dry syrups.
Separate facilities are provided to manufacture ayurvedic formulations, which includes, tablet, oral liquids, capsules, external preparations and ayurvedic generic products. The factory has an in-house Quality Control laboratory with facilities to conduct chemical, instrumental and microbial analysis of pharmaceutical raw materials and finished goods including ayurvedic/ herbal formulations. All the manufacturing and Quality Control activities are carried out by FDA-approved technical staff and strict GMP regulations are followed for the same.
Varma Pharmacy is known for its quality ayurvedic and allopathic formulations. Products like `Tansino'' ayurvedic elixir for throat infection and tonsilitis, ''Abrosta'' ayurvedic tablets for menstrual disorders and ''Madhuhar'' anti-diabetic herbal tablets are few research-based unique products, and are very well accepted by the medical profession.
Varma is also known for their household insecticide products like ''Die-zone'' bedbug killer and ''Oona'' lice killer hair oil, which are pioneer products in their respective segments and are manufactured at isolated premises.
Presently the company is in process of consolidation and is preparing to enter the global markets and is, at the same time, strengthening its position in the domestic market. To introduce quality and efficiency in the organization functioning, the company has started with ISO certification process and targeting to be ISO certified by January 2003.
The next step would be WHO GMP certification for which the target is December 2003. The company is focusing on export markets and has already located regional partners in some of the African countries. The process of product registration has begun in few of them and the company is expecting to get its products registered by the end of this year.
To strengthen its position in the domestic market Varma Pharmacy is gradually introducing new products and is in process of appointing additional sales people. The company is targeting to appoint additional 50 field staff till December 2003.
Recently the company has received DCGI permission to export new drug formulation ''Sildenafil Tablets''. The company has begun the process of obtaining DCGI permission to manufacture this product for domestic marketing and the approval is expected by end-February 2003.
